Millions of people’s phones will ring and receive the “Armageddon” alarm. The system is designed to warn people that there is danger nearby.
Authorities want to test the British Government’s new emergency alert system. Citizens will hear an alarm on their mobile phone and receive warning messages via SMS.
It’s all part of a test
Such “Armageddon” alarms usually herald calamities or dangers such as floods, extreme weather conditions, fires or even terrorist attacks.
Warning messages describe the danger, how a person should act in such a situation and where they can get help.
The Labor Party has been pushing for the system for more than ten years, with ministers promising to initially introduce it in 2013. Meanwhile, the British Government promised in August 2022 to launch the system in October, according to the DailyMail.
“The new system will allow the Government to warn people much more comprehensively about imminent dangers such as floods, storms, fires or terrorist attacks,” said Kit Malthouse, a member of the British Parliament.
Later, the launch of the system was announced for the beginning of 2023. So far, only local tests have been carried out.
A Government spokesman said: “Emergency alerts will be a vital tool to help us better respond to emergencies, both nationally and locally. We worked closely with the emergency services to develop this system and carried out extensive testing before its national rollout. We expect to make updates soon.”
