“Romania celebrates its 147th year of independence today”

--
The President of the Senate, Nicolae Ciucă sent a message on the occasion of Romania’s National Independence Day.

“Today, Romania celebrates its 147th year of independence. The celebration of this defining moment for the existence of our state has returned to May 10, according to historical truth. On May 9, 1877, the draft Declaration of Independence was voted by Parliament, and the next day the act was signed by Prince Charles, producing its legal effects.
Romania’s independence was obtained through the blood sacrifice of our soldiers, who fought bravely in the War of Independence. The heroes from Plevna, Grivița, Smârdan, Rahova and Vidin deserve the gratitude of all the generations that succeeded them. As a general, I emphasize that the intervention of our army was decisive in 1877, after repeated Russian failures in front of the Ottoman defensive lines.
Today we also remember other essential moments for our history, such as the oath of Prince Carol in 1866 and the proclamation of the Kingdom of Romania in 1881. May 10 marks Romania’s entry into European civilization, this being the national ideal for which the Pashoptist generation fought.
Happy Birthday Romania! Happy birthday, Romanians!” – sent the President of the Senate, Nicolae Ciucă.
