Fianna Fáil Senator Lisa Chambers has issued a resounding call for increased investment in critical infrastructure to support the development of offshore wind energy in the West and Northwest of Ireland.

The European election candidate in the Midlands Northwest constituency has stressed that without significant investment in the grid and ports, the region will be unable to harness its vast offshore wind potential, impeding progress towards renewable energy targets and perpetuating economic disparities.

Drawing upon her previous statements, Senator Chambers has highlighted the urgent need for infrastructure development in the West and Northwest, citing the region’s significant underdevelopment compared to the rest of the country.

Senator Chambers stressed the west and north west region infrastructure development is at 37% of the EU average, while Dublin is at 115% of the EU average.

“If we are serious about tilting the balance back in favor of our region we must invest in key infrastructure that is needed for development,” she added.

She has highlighted the crucial role of robust infrastructure in unlocking economic growth and job creation opportunities, particularly in the renewable energy sector.

Expressing dismay at the lack of plans from EirGrid to address grid investment deficits in the region, Senator Chambers questions the absence of a comprehensive plan from Minister for the Environment, Climate, and Communications Eamon Ryan.

She stated that without a clear roadmap for infrastructure investment, the West and Northwest will continue to lag behind, missing out on the potential benefits of offshore wind energy development.

“Investing in the grid and ports in the West and Northwest is not just about addressing infrastructure deficits; it’s about unlocking the region’s full potential,” Senator Chambers said “We cannot afford to overlook the immense opportunities that offshore wind energy presents for economic growth and sustainability. Minister Ryan must prioritize the development of a comprehensive plan to ensure that the West and Northwest are not left behind.”

Senator Chambers has echoed previous statements regarding the offshore wind energy potential off the west coast, emphasizing the need for urgent action to capitalize on this abundant resource.

She has stressed that failure to invest in critical infrastructure will hinder progress towards Ireland’s renewable energy goals and perpetuate economic disparities between regions.

“Time is of the essence, we cannot afford to delay investment in infrastructure any longer,” Senator Chambers said. “The West and Northwest deserve equitable opportunities for economic growth and prosperity. Minister Ryan must act now to ensure that Ireland’s offshore wind potential is realized for the benefit of all.”
