May 9 is a special day because we celebrate peace and unity in Europe. It is a day with triple significance for Romanians: Independence Day proclaimed in 1877, Victory Day of the United Nations Coalition in the Second World War and Europe Day. On this occasion, a message addressed to the people of Olt was sent by Olt Deputy Florin Barbu, Minister of Agriculture.

Today, more than ever, we feel what it means to be European citizens with full rights – says minister Florin Barbu, social-democratic parliamentarian from Olt. The message is sent on the occasion of the triple significance of May 9.

“May 9 is a part of the history of the Romanian people, full of meaning, gratitude and respect for the ancestors. On May 9, 1877, Romania declared, through the voice of Mihail Kogălniceanu, the right to call itself an independent state and became a guarantor of maintaining the status quo in this region, a role it continues to play today, alongside by the EU and NATO partners. And with an unjust war on Romania’s border, against the freedom of the Ukrainian people, with whom we stand in solidarity, we see how important the peace and safety of a country is.

On May 9, 1945, Romanians and Europeans experienced the joy of the capitulation of the Third Reich. The signing of the act of unconditional surrender of Germany led to the end of the Second World War.

May 9 is also Europe Day and today, more than ever, we feel what it means to be European citizens with full rights, we are part of the Schengen Area, negotiating partners at state and government level and beneficiaries of community development projects and measures local, of Romanian agriculture and Romanian farmers
