The ceremony began at the “Sorrowful Mother” monument. “In any war there are NO winners, all sides lose”; “The EU is the best guarantee to have peace”

The day of May 9 started in Chisinau with the laying of flowers in memory of the victims of the Second World War.

Symbolically, the ceremony began, around 8:00 a.m., at the “Grieving Mother” monument, erected in memory of the victims of the 1992 war for the independence of the Republic of Moldova, located on the territory of the “Eternitate” memorial complex in Chisinau.

The President Maia Sandu, the President of the Parliament, Igor Grosu, the European Commissioner for Budget and Administration, Johannes Hahn, laid flowers at the “Mourning Maia”, followed by the Ministers of Defense and Internal Affairs, Anatolie Nosatîi and Adrian Efros, the Director of the Information Service and Security, Alexandru Musteata, the EU Ambassador in Chisinau, Janis Mazeiks, civil servants, veterans and civilians.

Officials later laid flowers at memorial plaques and the “eternal fire”.

President Maia Sandu declared that today is a day of commemoration “and we, Moldovans, commemorate our dead in silence”. According to the head of state, there are people who still try to divide us today, “but there is no contradiction between peace and our aspirations for peace”.

“Today we commemorate our earthlings who fought in World War II to bring peace back to the continent. Today we celebrate peace, because May 9, 1945 was the first day of peace on our continent and today we celebrate Europe, Europe being the most enduring and successful peace project. It is a day that reminds us how vulnerable peace is, how dramatic war is, and that we must do absolutely everything to prevent wars on the continent, in the world in general. For the Republic of Moldova, the shortest path to sustainable peace is integration into the EU. We celebrate peace and the EU today. At the same time, we remember the sacrifice that our forefathers made so that we can live in peace”, said President Maia Sandu.

The Head of the Legislature, Igor Grosu, added that humanity must learn the lesson that “in any war there are no winners”.

“I lose all parts and the most tragic are human lives, which are lost and never recovered. It remains the pain and the memory that marks generations and destinies. Looking at what is happening in the vicinity today, it is an additional opportunity to remember those who really contributed to bring peace to Europe, preserve it and transmit these messages to future generations”, Igor Grosu pointed out .

According to the European Commissioner for Budget and Administration, Johannes Hahn, commemorating the victims of war and celebrating peace in Europe “is not a coincidence”.

“We commemorate the victims of war, but we also remember that only in the European Union can peace be preserved, and it is no coincidence that we commemorate and think about the prospects on the same day. The European Union is the best guarantee to have peace, stability and prosperity”, declared Johannes Hahn at the “Eternitate” Complex in Chisinau.

We mention that today the pro-Russian opposition, led by the Socialist Party led by the defendant Igor Dodon and the parties affiliated with the convicted fugitive Ilan Șor, will arrive at the same commemorative complex.

Starting at 12.00, various activities dedicated to Europe Day will take place in the Great National Sinkhole Square.
