The Ballon d’Or won by Diego Maradona after the 1986 World Cup will be auctioned. It is the first time that such a trophy will be sold at auction.

The Ballon d’Or trophy won by Diego Maradona after being named the best player at the 1986 World Cup will be auctioned in France on June 6, the Aguttes auction house announced on Tuesday.

This is the first Ballon d’Or to be auctioned, Reuters reports.

Maradona, who died in 2020, won the trophy presented by France Football after leading Argentina to the World Cup title in Mexico in 1986. Many football fans will remember Maradona’s two goals in the quarter-finals since the 1986 World Cup against England. A goal was scored with Maradona’s fist, a success that the former Argentinian footballer called “the hand of God”. The second goal was scored after Maradona started from his own half and beat five English players. It was considered the “goal of the century”.

The shirt Maradona wore that day, along with the match ball, have already been auctioned off.

The Ballon d’Or award was introduced at the 1982 World Cup, and its list of winners includes Italy’s Paolo Rossi, Brazil’s Romario and Ronaldo, France’s Zinedine Zidane, as well as Maradona’s compatriot Lionel Messi.
