Two Ukrainian security officials were detained on Tuesday on suspicion of planning to assassinate President Volodymyr Zelensky, the SBU announced.

It is about two colonels from the government dignitaries protection service, who are accused of having transmitted classified information to Russia, said the SBU. The intelligence agency of Ukraine also adds that it destroyed the “network of agents” that was coordinated by the FSB.

The two Ukrainian colonels were recruited by the FSB before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and their responsibility was to find people from Zelenskiy’s close group to convince to kidnap and kill him. The SBU also said it foiled “ongoing” plans to assassinate President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Other Ukrainian officials would also have been targeted by these plans, including the head of the SBU, Vasil Maliuk, and the head of the DIU, Kirilo Budanov.

Since the beginning of Russia’s war against Ukraine, President Zelensky has been targeted several times by such networks that planned his assassination.

In August 2023, for example, a woman from Nikolaev was detained for belonging to a group planning to assassinate the president. She was accused of gathering information about Zelenskiy’s visit to Nikolaev in order to then alert Russian air forces to launch an attack on his route. She was caught just as she was trying to transfer the information to the Russians.

In April, a Polish man was also charged with involvement in a plot to assassinate President Zelenski.
