Locals proudly display the fruits of their traditional orchards, established long ago, and offer shoppers a chance to taste the fresh cherries brought by this year’s favorable weather. Prices are tempting for consumers, varying between 25 and 30 lei per kilogram, half of those of imported cherries found in supermarkets or markets in Ploiesti, writes observatorulph.ro.

Over the years, the commune of Păulești has enjoyed a long tradition in the cultivation of cherries. Cherry orchards are an integral part of the countryside, and almost every household boasts at least one cherry tree in its garden.

Apart from the joy of picking and eating the sweet and juicy fruit, cherry picking is also an opportunity for the locals, especially for those in retirement. Thus, each spring brings with it a small business for these people, who round off their income from the sale of cherries.

Moreover, Păulești City Hall organizes a cherry festival every year, attracting many participants from the community and beyond. The festival becomes an occasion of joy and socialization, highlighting the importance of these fruits to this community here.

In the 2024 season, cherries made their appearance on the markets as early as March. Their price, however, was truly prohibitive. Moreover, in this new season, because of the incredibly high price, the cherries ended up being sold by the piece.

In the markets of Constanța, cherries had appeared since March despite the fact that there are almost two months left until their actual season. However, their presence on the stalls seems rather decorative, considering that they were sold at prices varying between 150 and 250 lei per kilogram, depending on market demand.

Cherries are beneficial fruits for health

Cherries are a rich source of nutrients and antioxidants, offering numerous benefits. The fruit is rich in vitamin C, flavonoids and anthocyanins, which fight against oxidative stress and reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as cancer and heart disease.
