Spring fruits are now available on roadsides and in markets. For example, on the DJ 102 county route, which crosses the Păulești commune, the locals sell their harvest of cherries freshly picked from their own garden.

Cherries sold by the roadside

Known as “May cherries”, these fruits are sold at prices between 25 and 30 lei per kilogram, significantly more affordable than those imported from supermarkets and some markets in Ploiești.

Cherry production for this season is predicted to be a good one due to favorable weather conditions this year, unlike previous years.

Păulești commune is recognized in Prahova for its cherry orchards, planted by locals over the years, as a family tradition. It is hard to find a household in this commune without at least one cherry tree.

Thus, every spring, the locals, especially the elderly, increase their income by selling these delicious fruits, depending on how rich the harvest is, according to information on observatorulph.ro.

Every year, Păulești City Hall organizes a cherry festival attended by many locals and more. The cherries have already ripened in Alba Iulia, after weeks of beautiful weather and heat, especially in the first two weeks of April. They also appeared on the market, the price of one kilogram being between 40 and 50 lei.

The cherries ripened faster this year

Favorable weather in recent weeks has contributed to the rapid ripening of cherries this year. Usually, in other years, cherries were only available in June, but in 2024, thanks to the favorable weather, they ripened much faster. In some orchards in Alba Iulia, the cherries are already ready to be picked.

Cherries are already available for sale in the Alba Iulia market. For example, a trader from Micești sells a kilogram for 40 lei, and a 500-gram casserole costs 20 lei. These cherries come from a 10-year-old cherry tree.

Another trader in the Alba Iulia market sells cherries imported from Greece, at the price of 50 lei per kilogram. In recent years, cherries have had high prices, being considered almost “luxury” products.

Their exorbitant price is mainly due to the short season in which they can be traded. The favorable weather this year caused the cherries to ripen faster than in other years.
