Did you know that daily habits can influence your life expectancy more than genetics? Recent research shows that a healthy lifestyle can “correct” unfavorable genetics, adding up to 5 years to your life span!

The research was published in the journal BMJ Evidence-Based Medicine.

It involved more than 350,000 people, classifying them based on their genetic profile and lifestyle. The first discovery the researchers reached was that habits have a greater influence on life expectancy than genetics: people with an unhealthy lifestyle had a 78% higher risk of dying prematurely (before the age of 75 ) than those with a healthy lifestyle.

On the other hand, genetics have increased the likelihood of premature death only by 21%.

Genetic inheritance is no longer destiny: Lifestyle can save you from an early death

However, what is more important is that when a person with bad genetics adheres to a healthy lifestyle, the risk is reduced by 54%. Translated into years, this equates to 5.2 years of life gained.

Things become much more complicated when a person with a negative genetic profile has an unhealthy lifestyle: in this case, the risk of dying before reaching the age of 75 is more than double.

Do you want to live longer? Give up unhealthy habits and choose an active lifestyle!

“Public health policies to promote healthy lifestyles could be a powerful complement to health care and lessen the impact of genetic factors on people’s lifespan,” the researchers write.

At the same time, another research – in this case carried out by the European Office of the WHO – confirmed that the pandemic had a destructive effect on the lifestyle, especially in the case of children.

The research showed that during the pandemic, 35% of children between the ages of 7 and 9 increased their time spent watching TV, using video games or social media; for 28%, time spent in outdoor activities decreased.
