On the first day of Easter, Romanians from several areas of the country observe a series of traditions and customs, some of which are inherited from generation to generation.

On the night from Saturday to Sunday, the priests officiate the Resurrection service, at which time the food brought by the faithful is also sanctified.

According to tradition, people go to church dressed in new clothes, a custom that symbolizes the cleansing of the body, in addition to that of the soul.

Also, according to popular belief, those who go to church on Easter night will have joy and luck all year.

The candle lit at the Resurrection service must not be thrown away, but must be kept throughout the year, so that it can be lit in times of sorrow.

It is also believed that whoever stays awake on the night of Easter Sunday is rewarded by God with the fulfillment of wishes.

Until the Ascension, people greet each other saying “Christ is Risen!” and I answer “Truly he is Risen!”.

“There is a belief that now the gates of Heaven open and remain so for seven days, until Thomas Sunday. That is why the royal doors of the altar are removed in the church, which are set aside for the whole Bright Week”, it is mentioned in the Dictionary of symbols and traditional Romanian beliefs.

At the same time, it is believed that whoever dies on Easter Day goes directly to Heaven, and whoever is born on this day will be lucky all his life.

In some areas of the country, people wash their faces with water in which they have put a red egg and a silver coin. The one who washes himself with this water will be healthy and will have luck with money all year.

It is also said that the chicks that hatch from the eggs on Easter day will live a little, notes the quoted source.

Also, according to popular belief, those who embrace each other on Easter Day will also meet in the afterlife.

At the same time, after praying and taking anafura, people in several areas of the country eat an egg and a piece of fish, believing that they will be healthy and be swift like fish.

Moreover, when they return from the Easter service, people pluck grass from the field, which they bring home and place on the doorstep, where it will remain for three days.

Those who follow this tradition believe that this way they will be safe from diseases until the next Easter.
