Romanian students won one gold, four silver and one bronze medal at the Balkan Mathematical Olympiad (BMO) for Seniors 2024, held in Bulgaria, as the accompanying teachers of the group of students tell Edupedu.ro exclusively.

The gold medalist, Vlad Titus Spătaru, obtained the first place with the maximum score, being the only student from the countries with official status in the Balkans with this performance.

Romania would place in the first 3 out of 22 participating states in total, as estimated by professor Cătălin Gherghe from the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics of the University of Bucharest (FMI-UB), team leader. The ranking has not yet been published by the organizers, according to Gherghe.

“The team is constantly changing, generations are changing. Three children who were at the Olympics last year and two years ago are no longer in the team. I’m at Harvard, Princeton, Cambridge. At least two other children are in their first participation in the seniors – the ones who took the bronze and a silver,” said Gherghe.
