An accident occurred this morning in Chisinau, at the intersection of Ion Pelivan and Vissarion Belinkski streets, offers at least 3 road safety lessons to avoid such situations.

A BMW Series 2 Grand Tourer arrived at this intersection on Pelivan Street, intending to turn right. There is a separate right turn lane here and there is also a green arrow, which allows right turns when the traffic light is red, but only after coming to a complete stop and ensuring that pedestrians or other vehicles have priority. The BMW did not stop, but continued to move forward, not giving priority to a truck, which eventually hit the car.

The first lesson here would, of course, be the one related to the green arrow and the multiple situations in traffic when the green arrow on a black plate is treated as a lit green traffic light. It does not give priority in such cases, and in some intersections with less traffic coming from a certain direction, this effect of cars passing almost as if at a green light appears even more pronounced.

The second lesson here would be the inertia of the main road sign, which may have had an effect. Yes, the trajectory followed by the BMW is the one designated as the priority road in this intersection, the other two directions being secondary. And for a long time, this intersection was not signalized, namely these signs dictated the way to cross it. But when the traffic lights work, these signs are no longer valid, and it becomes a standard directed intersection. Thus, even if the BMW was on the path of the main road, that indicator has no effect, only the traffic lights count.

And the third lesson would be the reminder about the blind spots of trucks. The BMW arrived exactly in a blind spot, and most likely the truck driver initially saw him slowing down and thought he had stopped, without seeing him directly. But, since direct visibility is impossible at that point around the truck, the truck driver did not avoid the accident either.
