Coles shoppers issued urgent warning over ‘$3 Smeg Kettle’ sale

--

Coles customers are being warned to be wary of a new scam targeting bargain hunters.

A fake Facebook post is currently circulating on Facebook, telling social media users they can pick up a Smeg kettle for just $3 as part of a new Mother’s Day promotion.

The popular kitchen appliance — available in an array of colors — typically retails for around $200 and is highly sought after by home owners.

The scam post includes a photograph showing a fake display of the bargain kettles with a Coles sign and a $3 price tag hanging above.

It further claimed that Coles is offering the bargain purchase to customers who meet certain criteria.

“Coles is running a promotion for Mother’s Day!” the post read. “All women over 30 can get a Smeg kettle. Answer four questions to receive yours.”

The post has already attracted hundreds of responses, with many Facebook users claiming to have already received the $3 kettle.

“It arrived in just three days, delivered this morning. I still can’t believe it’s real. Thank you so much!” said one, sharing an image of the Smeg bought in her kitchen.

Another also posted a similar image and wrote: “Great! This is a great kettle, I would never have believed in such a promotion, delivered very quickly!”

Disturbingly, other Facebook users said they were going to sign up for the promotion based on the favorable reviews.

“At first I didn’t believe it, but the support confirmed everything. Therefore, already order yourself,” another said.

Coles replied

A Coles spokesperson has confirmed that the promotion is indeed a scam and is not linked to the supermarket in any way.

“Coles advises customers to be aware of websites, competitions and other unsolicited communications that use the Coles brand without Coles’ permission or which promote Coles rewards in an attempt to appear legitimate,” the spokesperson told 7NEWS.com.au. “These offers predominantly attempt to collect your personal details or financial information and Coles will never request personal or banking details in unsolicited communications. “We encourage people to report any suspicious communication you may have received to the ACCC via their Scamwatch page.”
