Eli Laslean, one of the designers who made outfits for Carmen Iohannis in the last 10 years, talked about how the wife of the President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, chooses her official outfits.
In the 10 years, fashion designer Eli Laslean specified that she designed over 50 outfits for Carmen Iohannis, many of them being worn at official appearances with the President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis.

“The perfect dress for me is still the dress that fits the person I know. She is a very cheerful person (nr. Carmen Iohannis) with a very good vibe and it is a joy and a pleasure to create her outfits. She is reserved because every time she appeared in public only on the arm of the president,” said Eli Laslean, one of the designers who made outfits for Carmen Iohannis.
Asked what happened to the wardrobe worn by Klaus Iohannis’ wife, the fashion designer said:
“Some he likes he keeps. Those who only wear them once are with us, they return them to us. I kept them and I would really like to make an exhibition because it would be a very interesting thing”, said Eli Laslean on Antena 3 CNN.
“We must know the language of clothing”
Regarding how to choose outfits for official visits, the fashion designer emphasized the good knowledge of clothing language. In this context, she presented an example of a dress that was appreciated even by Pope Francis.
“I have an album that is very dear to me, made on the occasion of the visit of His Holiness Pope Francis. And on this occasion I made four outfits for her. This is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful dresses I have made for her. She really wanted a dress clear as the sky, or blue as the clear sky, to put it more clearly. And indeed it was much appreciated. Clothes send a message about us and then it depends on what we want to convey and we must know the language of clothing.
And in the church I opted for this cardinal color, which is very suitable. (…) I know that the Pope congratulated her and ranked our first lady the best dressed among the ladies of the countries that visited him and congratulated the designers.

“I could not say that he is obedient. He asks my opinion every time. But she has her own personality and like any woman, she knows exactly what suits her and what pleases her. At the visit of President Macron, all these criticisms of the shortness and such, well our lady has a longer skirt than President Macron’s. I have not heard of the president’s wife being criticized.
We, these Romanians, give our opinion and criticize everything. I don’t think that was the problem. It happened. I didn’t give it importance”, said Eli Laslean.

“So I just remember that I get emotional. I had another outfit made of this particular brocade. And Mrs. Macron I know admired it and said yes, it’s Melania Trump’s style. I had prepared three outfits for Mrs. Iohannis for President Macron’s visit to Romania and during the day I received a call from her entourage and they told me that Mrs. Macron is coming to my workshop in 10 minutes.
I started speaking in French and told Mrs. Macron that I dreamed of becoming a French teacher, but that I studied economics and do fashion. It was just a viewing and a courtesy call.
And Mrs. Iohannis, when she was in Spain, was invited to watch or visit the fashion house that dresses Queen Letitia. So it’s a protocol that gets used here,” added fashion designer Eli Laslean.
