This year, April 26 marks the 38th anniversary of the tragic accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, one of the most devastating human-caused catastrophes in the 20th century.

On the International Day of Commemoration of the Victims of the Chernobyl Disaster, President Maia Sandu expressed her gratitude to the Moldovans who participated in the liquidation of the radioactive danger. More than 3,500 fellow citizens risked their health and lives to stop the spread of radiation, and today, half of them are no longer alive.

“We have a duty to honor the sacrifice and memory of heroes and provide support to their families. In the last three years, the Government increased the allowances for participants in the liquidation of the consequences of the Chernobyl accident and indexed the annual material aid provided to them.

By the end of this year, 80 families of the participants in the liquidation of the consequences of the Chernobyl accident will receive free ownership of apartments from the state. Thus we respect our commitment to build a society where people live in safety and well-being”, said the president.

The head of state also mentioned that the aftermath of the Chernobyl explosions and radioactive leaks serve as an example of nuclear dangers and remind of the importance of international cooperation for the peaceful and safe use of nuclear technologies. And the war in Ukraine has brought the risk of a nuclear accident to the fore in the region.

“The international community cannot accept this. That is why we need stricter rules on nuclear safety and better cooperation in this direction. If the countries of the world will act in solidarity, in the name of the common good, to protect people and the environment, we can have a peaceful and safe future”, concluded President Maia Sandu.

In the plenary session on Friday, April 26, the President of the Parliament, Igor Grosu, expressed his gratitude to the more than three thousand Moldovans who participated in the liquidation of the radioactive danger, many of whom chose to have various disabilities or died much too early.

“A devastating catastrophe, in which thousands of people died, hundreds of thousands more were seriously affected. We must do everything possible so that such events never happen again, so that people live in peace and safety”, said the President of the Parliament, Igor Grosu.
