Romania is facing an interesting situation on the fuel market.

Although the country has three refineries that produce fuels, it is a net importer of diesel and a net exporter of gasoline.

This reality, combined with the prevailing preference for diesel among consumers, contributes to the fact that diesel is generally more expensive than petrol in the local market.

This trend differs from many other European markets.

The decrease in diesel prices at the pump is not only manifested in Romania, the margins for diesel have decreased, at least in Europe, for the fifth week in a row, writes economica.net.

Europe is facing an oversupply of diesel.

The situation is accentuated by increased deliveries from India and the resumption of activities of a major refinery.

Reliance, the operator of the world’s largest refinery, has significantly increased diesel shipments to Europe, a maneuver complicated by the need to bypass the Suez Canal.

In March, European and Turkish ports received 618,000 tonnes of diesel from India.

Thus, a 2.7 times increase compared to the previous month was reported.

At the same time, deliveries from the US and Saudi Arabia increased, reinforcing the trend of market saturation.

In contrast, gasoline demand remains high in Europe and the United States.

This is supported by profitable margins and export restrictions imposed by Russia.

Solid demand for gasoline keeps prices higher than diesel.
