Brewers starting pitcher Wade Miley talks about his elbow injury

Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Wade Miley talks about his elbow injury on April 22, 2024.

PITTSBURGH – With a starting rotation depleted by injuries, the Milwaukee Brewers have been in dire need for someone to step up on the pitching staff.

Through the early portion of the season, it turns out that it isn’t just somebody who has; it’s been just about everyone who takes the ball.

The Brewers’ first bullpen game of the season came last Wednesday and it went about to perfection in a 1-0 win. Their second was almost as excellent in quality and equally successful in the result.

Five Brewers relievers combined to stymy the Pittsburgh Pirates offense for 27 outs and made a three-run third but otherwise a quiet night from the offense holding up for a 3-2 win at PNC Park.

After Bryse Wilson, Bryan Hudson, Elvis Peguero and Trevor Megill got the Brewers to the ninth with a one-run lead, Joel Payamps’ ninth inning was an adventure because of the team’s defense.

With one out, Payamps botched a slow chopper to the mound from Edward Olivares, allowing him to reach first on an error. Joey Wiemer then dropped a lazy fly ball to shallow left moments later, putting men on first and second. But Payamps buckled down by getting Jared Triolo to fly out to right and striking out Andrew McCutchen for the save.

Brewers’ bullpen did its job in the middle innings

The Brewers offense has cooled as the game has progressed, but the bullpen has done its job. Bryan Hudson recorded five outs in relief of Bryse Wilson, then Elvis Peguero threw a 1-2-3 seventh with the help of a double play to get the Brewers to the eighth with a 3-2 lead.

Bryse Wilson exits with the lead

Starting his second bullpen game of the season was Bryse Wilson, who followed up a very strong outing in his first start last week against San Diego with 4 ⅕ innings of two-run ball. A home run hit by Bryan Reynolds represented all the damage against Wilson, who battled his command but ultimately allowed only three hits and two walks while striking out three.

Bryan Reynolds takes Bryse Wilson out of the yard

Falling behind batters finally burned Bryse Wilson in the bottom of the third. He hadn’t been living in the zone as much as he would have early but got away with it for two scoreless. But it bit him as he walked Connor Joe on four pitches and then fell behind Bryan Reynolds, 3-1, and piped a fastball that he hit out to right-center for a two-run homer to draw Pittsburgh within 3-2.

The Brewers opened the scoring in the third

Pirates starter Josh Fleming retired the side in order through two innings. In the third, Sal Frelick reached on an error to lead off, advanced on Brice Turang’s one-out walk and then scored on William Contreras’ single to center. Contreras was the first batter to face Luis Ortiz, the Pirates’ right-hander who took over for Fleming, who was serving as an opener.

Ortiz quickly lost the strike zone, hitting Willy Adames with an 0-2 pitch to load the bases with one out. Jake Bauers struck out swinging without Ortiz throwing a pitch in the strike zone, but Rhys Hoskins was more patient and drew the count full before being hit by a pitch in the forearm to bring in a second run.

Blake Perkins followed with a four-pitch walk to make it 3-0, Brewers.
