The mystery of the death of a mother and her 10-year-old daughter has been solved after 24 years. The killer revealed everything on his deathbed

The remains of a West Virginia woman and her daughter have been found 24 years after they were murdered. The man who shot them confessed everything on his deathbed, reports CNN.

In a “detailed, indisputable, non-conflicting” confession to one of the case’s investigators, Larry Webb admitted earlier this month that he fatally shot Natasha “Alex” Carter, who was 10 at the time, and her mother her, Susan Carter, nearly 24 years ago, District Attorney Benjamin Hatfield said at a news conference.

In 2000, the Carters lived in Webb’s house. He told the investigator that some of the money he kept in the house had disappeared, and Webb suspected that Susan Carter had stolen it and spent it.

“They got into an argument about it, and he shot her,” Hatfield said.

Webb testified that he felt compelled at the time to shoot Alex as well, so that there would be no potential witnesses to the crime.

Webb told the investigator that he hid the bodies in the basement of his home and then, over the course of two nights, dug a grave in the woods on his property, where he buried the two together.

Alex’s father Rick Lafferty said the day he found out where his daughter’s remains were was “a sad day, but also a happy day because she can bring her child home”.

“24 years have passed. I almost gave up hope several times,” he added.

Webb was considered a suspect from the beginning of the investigation, according to authorities. In October 2023, he was charged with murder for Alex’s death, but the bodies had not been found at the time. Before charging him, investigators had DNA evidence and witness statements, Hatfield said.

But according to the indictment, “due to Larry Webb’s health, legal proceedings have been delayed for various reasons. He was moved to a nursing home. I had problems with shipping. I had problems with obtaining medical authorization to be incarcerated,” explained the prosecutor.

Before a court hearing earlier this month, one of the investigators was able to speak with Webb at the nursing home. That’s when Webb confessed to the murders, detailing the motive and saying where he buried the bodies, Hatfield said.

The remains were difficult to find, however, because Webb had memory problems and was unable to provide the exact location.

The killer died on Monday morning. Hours later, the bodies of Susan and Alex Carter were found, the prosecutor said.
