ANALYZE PNL’s Rise and GOLD’s Decline. Why populism has no place for concrete solutions

--

The new INSCOP survey, carried out in April, shows that PNL registers a significant increase in voting intention to 26.7% – compared to 25.6%. PSD reached 28.4% – compared to 30.6%, and AUR registered a significant decrease and reached 14.4% AUR – compared to 17.4% in last month’s survey.

The PNL is consolidating its power

The PNL is therefore climbing rapidly in terms of voting intention in the local council elections, a fact that confirms the trend of the last round of elections, in which the PNL showed its strength in local administrations and insisted on stability. In the 2020 elections, PNL won 34.58%, obtaining 1,232 mayors at national level, 14,182 local councilors, 474 county councilors and 17 presidents of County Councils.

As the Liberals point out, the investments that have created jobs and the attraction of European money that they champion, money that has really changed communities and greatly increased living standards, weigh more heavily on voters.

The liberals have the biggest rise among the parties on the Romanian political scene, and this could have several consequences. With an increase in support at the local level, the PNL can strengthen and expand its control over local governments. This will allow him to implement policies and projects that respond to the specific needs of communities and improve the lives of citizens, thus strengthening confidence in the party and giving it a solid foundation for the upcoming elections – presidential and parliamentary, in the fall and winter.

Second, success in local elections can strengthen the PNL’s position in the national political arena as well. With increased power at the local level, the party can exert greater influence on the national political agenda and more effectively promote policies and reforms at the government level. The rise of the PNL can be interpreted as a sign of public confidence in its ability to ensure stability and continuity in the administration of public affairs. This message can attract the support and trust of a wider segment of the electorate, thereby strengthening the party’s position in the long term. At the same time, depending on the results of the local elections, the PNL could gain more influence within the coalition or redefine its position and strategy in relation to its governing partners.

According to the INSCOP survey, almost a quarter of the subjects believe that the priority of the future mayor must be the creation of jobs and the attraction of investors.

“Regarding the local agenda, most Romanians are interested in creating jobs, attracting investors to their localities, building hospitals, dispensaries, schools, kindergartens, nurseries and only then road infrastructure and utilities. It is a mature vision of a population that is beginning to correctly understand the order of priorities for a sustainable, balanced development and an improved quality of life”, says Remus Ştefureac, director of INSCOP Research.

The extreme right is losing the electorate

Contrary to expectations, AUR is registering lower and lower percentages, which proves that it is not the most aggressively rising in the polls, that circuses and scandals on social networks do not bring votes. The decline in Simion’s party can also be seen from the bank of the electorate, which is paying hard for the lack of seriousness of those from the AUR, especially at the local level where the electoral offer in many localities is made up of people with criminal problems or rejected by the political formations they come from.

AUR seems to be having difficulty maintaining a consistent and stable line in terms of his messages and actions. This lack of coherence and unity could lead to a decline in the electorate’s confidence in the party. The electorate is looking for leaders and parties that offer concrete solutions and responsible approaches to real problems, and the lack of a clear vision and concrete proposals could affect electoral support for the AUR. It thus proves that in the long term, populism and demagoguery cannot take the place of concrete public policies and real solutions to Romanians’ problems.

In conclusion, the PNL is counting on the success of local administrations on June 9, those who thoroughly built stability at the regional level, a card that proves to be a winner, compared to the populism of the opposition.
