Attitudes of Romanians regarding the proposal to close the shops

The latest study carried out by Reveal Marketing Research aimed to identify the attitudes and perceptions of Romanians regarding the proposal of small traders to close supermarkets and hypermarkets on weekends.

Physical stores continue to be Romanians’ favorite for shopping, with 90% of Romanians getting used to doing their shopping in supermarkets and hypermarkets

According to the results of the latest study conducted by Reveal Marketing Research, brick-and-mortar stores remain Romanians’ favorite when it comes to household shopping.

Therefore, 90% of Romanians declare that they usually do their shopping in supermarkets and hypermarkets. In the top of consumers’ preferences we also find markets (51%) and neighborhood/proximity stores (42%). As a trend, we can see that both mature people over 55 (66%) and men (56% men vs. 47% women) prefer to a significantly greater extent to do their shopping by going to the market, this aspect can be influenced by traditional buying habits and the desire to purchase fresh and local products.

On the other hand, only 14% of Romanians use to do their shopping by placing orders online, especially those with high incomes of over 8,000 RON (20%).

36% of Romanians do their shopping when they need products, regardless of the day of the week. At the same time, 33% of them prefer to shop on weekdays, and 31% prefer to shop on weekends.

“It is remarkable to note that, despite the rise in popularity of online shopping, supermarkets and hypermarkets remain the main choices for shopping for household products, offering shopping experiences considered to be the most reliable. The study data also reveals that Romanians like flexibility when it comes to the purchasing process, with most declaring that they prefer to shop when they need to, regardless of the day of the week. This need for flexibility and adaptability can be a response to the fast pace of life and the diverse needs of consumers, reflecting their desire to manage their time efficiently and to have quick access to the necessary products”, says Marius Luican, CEO of Reveal Marketing Research.

Only 3 out of 10 Romanians would agree with closing the shops

Currently, 85% of Romanians declare that they have heard of the proposal of small traders to close their shops or establish a reduced schedule until noon. Men are more familiar with the subject (89% men vs. 82% women).

On the other hand, a quarter of young people between the ages of 18-24 (26%) declare that they have not heard of this proposal. The percentage is compared to the 15% registered at the level of the entire sample.

Measuring the Romanians’ perceptions regarding this subject, 41% rather express their disagreement regarding this initiative. Those who disagree are in particular:

  • men (45% men vs. 36% women)
  • and those with high incomes, over 8,000 RON (45%).

Only 33% of Romanians declare that they would agree with this initiative. People aged between 35-44 years (39%) stand out as being the most willing to support such a change.

At the same time, 26% of respondents are undecided about the initiative. A significantly higher share was recorded among young people aged between 18 and 24 (40%).

How would Romanians act if the shops were closed on the weekend?

In the scenario where the shops would be closed on the weekend, most Romanians declare that they would adapt and be careful to purchase everything they need during the week (64%). This includes especially those aged over 55 (70%).

28% declare that they would go to an open store nearby, to a greater extent those between 18-24 years old (45%). This age group recognized for the desire to have immediate access to quick solutions adapted to their active lifestyle.

On the other hand, 8% of Romanians would order online, especially young people between 25-35 years old (13%). They are also often more familiar with using the Internet and e-commerce platforms.
