Romanians will continue to pay capped prices for electricity and natural gas

--

Romanians will continue to pay capped prices for electricity and natural gas. The government extended the maximum tariffs until the spring of next year and, in addition, capped the tariffs for producers. The Ministry of Energy now expects suppliers to propose new offers and reduce prices even below the tariffs set by the Government, through capping.

The capped tariffs for electricity and natural gas will apply for another year. The return to the free market will be gradual.

Governors now expect suppliers to offer household consumers deals with prices even below the capped one.

But dealer representatives claim that settlements under the cap and offset scheme are delayed so friendlier offers are still waiting.

By the beginning of 2026, Romania would apply the rules of the free market for energy as well.

Sebastian Burduja, Minister of Energy: “As we promised, we are maintaining the energy and gas price ceiling mechanism for one more year, until March 31, 2025, so that the population, but also companies, as final consumers, remain protected against possible volatility in the energy and natural gas market, in the current conditions of global unpredictability. We have a market right now that has passed the period of turmoil and uncertainty. We have ensured and we want to ensure stability. We are among the EU countries where prices have fallen just below the thresholds, and we see this most often in gas bills and electricity consumers with a consumption of more than 300 kWh/month. I also kept my promise to eliminate the possibility of introducing the so-called sun tax, because we want the support of prosumers and a modern, decentralized, digitalized and decarbonized energy system.”

Romania has the lowest electricity price in the region, being an effect of investments in “green energy, in renewables”, declared the Minister of Energy, Sebastian Burduja.

“Today’s data show that Romania has the lowest electricity price in the region. And it is definitely an inclusive effect of investments in green energy, in renewables. You probably looked at the map and noticed that Spain and Portugal have very low prices. They have a large share of green energy and have limited interconnections with neighboring countries. They are practically insular. Of course, these interconnections are also important at the level of the European Union, we must realize them. In parallel, but through all the available funds: PNRR, the modernization fund, the contracts for differences scheme, which we can also discuss, Romania encourages and supports 5-6-7 thousand, maybe better, megawatts of green solar energy and wind Therefore, in the horizon of 2026-2028-2030, as these capacities will be put into operation, Romanians will have lower and lower bills”, declared Sebastian Burduja, on Thursday, in a press conference at the Victoria Palace.

The Minister made the clarifications in the context of the announcement about the approval in the Government of a draft emergency ordinance to amend and complete GEO 27/2022, which eliminates the solar tax for prosumers and updates the support scheme for all electricity and natural gas consumers , which will lead to lower prices for the next 12 months.
