A Russian military plane crashed Thursday off Crimea, the Ukrainian peninsula annexed by Russia in 2014, and the pilot managed to eject and escaped with his life, said Mikhail Razvojaev, the local governor installed by Moscow, reports AFP and Reuters.

“A military plane crashed into the sea (…) The pilot catapulted. He was recovered by rescuers from Sevastopol at a distance of 200 meters from the shore. His life is not in danger,” Razvojaev wrote on Telegram.
Earlier, Russian Telegram channels reported that a Russian Su-37 fighter jet crashed near Sevastopol. For the moment, it is not known what exactly caused the incident.

The French publication La Voix Du Nord also evokes an incident caused by an “overzeal” of the Russians in the context of the increase in Ukrainian attacks on the Crimean peninsula.
Ukraine has not yet reacted to the incident off the coast of Sevastopol, the headquarters of the Russian Black Sea Fleet. This city was annexed by Russia in March 2014 along with the entire Crimean peninsula, which Ukraine aimed to liberate after launching full-scale war against it on 24 February 2022.
The Russian Air Force has lost more than ten fighter jets since the beginning of this year, including Su-34 bombers, Su-35 fighter jets and Beriev A-50 radar planes.

The Oryx website, which openly confirms battlefield losses in Ukraine, states that Russia has lost 106 military aircraft since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, including only seven Su-35s. The Russian Air Force had 97 aircraft of this type as of February 24, 2022.
