Tragedy struck Rome’s Quadraro neighborhood tonight when a huge chasm opened up on via Sestio Menas. With a width and a depth of ten meters each, the abyss devoured two cars – a Dacia and a Renault – in a terrifying moment.
Local authorities from the Tuscolano and Prenestino groups immediately intervened, closing the road and securing the area, which was quickly cordoned off to prevent further tragic incidents. Fortunately, the event occurred around 1 am, when the streets were less crowded, thus limiting the risk of human casualties.
However, the consequences are serious for the two cars involved, which were badly damaged in the crash. Firefighters quickly intervened, using a crane to retrieve the cars from the deep pit, according to a video posted on the Welcome to Favelas Instagram page.
The causes of this catastrophic collapse are still unclear and investigations are ongoing to determine the factors involved and the type of intervention needed to repair the damaged road.
It is not the first event of this kind Just a day before, another sinkhole appeared on Via Portuense, in an area inhabited by nuns, swallowing a van. The phenomena were attributed to adverse weather conditions that affected the city, including torrential rains and storms, which caused floods and landslides. However, in both cases, no human casualties were reported and efforts to rebuild the roads began immediately to restore safety and normalcy in the community.
