JOINT STATEMENT

PATRIOTIC PARTIES PUBLICLY CONDEMN THE PSD-PNL OLIGARCY THAT SUPPRESSES DEMOCRACY IN ROMANIA

Romania is, as of March 8, facing the most serious constitutional slippage in the last 34 years. The untimely merging of local and European parliamentary elections by emergency ordinance represents a serious violation of the constitutional order by the PSD-PNL governing coalition. It’s been almost three weeks since the state institutions that were supposed to defend the Constitution, to defend the rights of Romanians, chose to remain silent and not have any reaction regarding this abuse of power practiced by PSD and PNL.

The serious and impermissible modification of the electoral legislation, by affecting electoral rights, is specific to a dictatorial regime that seeks by all means to prevent free and fair elections from taking place.

In the face of this abuse that defies any constitutional democratic demands, twenty-four conservative, Christian-democratic and sovereignist parties from Romania, together with important members of civil society, gathered in Bucharest, on March 27, 2024, on the occasion on the day of the Union of Bessarabia with the Motherland, to publicly condemn the capture process of the Romanian State by the PSD-PNL leaderships in total contempt of the Constitution and citizen rights.

At the moment when the People’s Advocate and the Constitutional Court refused to exercise their fundamental prerogatives as guarantors of fundamental rights and freedoms against the constitutional coup of the PSD-PNL Coalition, it automatically becomes objectively necessary for the coagulation of all patriotic forces against the suppressing PSD-PNL oligarchy democracy in our country.

We are protesting against the decision to merge the local elections with the European Parliament elections, because it restricts the Romanians’ right to vote. The restrictive bureaucratic procedure means that millions of citizens who do not have their domicile or residence in the locality where they live (students, perhaps) are prevented from voting in local elections.

We protest against the huge number of signatures required for registration in the elections. If we want to live in a democracy, then the number of 200,000 signatures to be able to run in the elections must be reduced. Romania is among the European countries with the largest number of signatures required to be able to run in the elections, a fact that prevents small parties and independent candidates from registering in the electoral race.

We protest against the election of mayors and chairmen of county councils in a single round, a process through which the PSD-PNL oligarchs consolidate their feudal and discretionary power over local communities.

We protest against the decision of the governors who, after having already bought the press, announce the censorship and elimination of dissident voices from important social media platforms.

At the defiant instigation of Pharaoh Klaus Werner Iohannis, PSD-PNL is trampling on the letter and spirit of the national Constitution, which guarantees the expression of the people’s sovereignty by participating in free, fair and periodic elections.

We are aware that, in these difficult moments for Romanian democracy, we cannot stand aside, but, on the contrary, we must sound the alarm and act against the abuse of power by PSD and PNL, against the constitutional coup that they are orchestrating in these days.

Either we unite and fight together to defend our Constitution, Country and democracy, or we condemn ourselves to a future in which all power will be monopolized by this new FSN. The fate of Romania will be decided now, in the coming weeks: either we will be free in a country that belongs to us, or we will be subjugated for the next decades.

In the spring of 2024, 35 years after the anti-communist Revolution of December 22, 1989, when thousands of compatriots died for the organization of democratic elections in our country, PSD-PNL suppresses the voice of civil society and attacks the sovereignty of the people by violating the free, fair and election period.
Today’s PSD-PNL oligarchic regime is smoothing Romania’s road to tyranny.

The organizations present at this meeting call on all democratic forces, independent candidates and free citizens to form a patriotic, Christian-democratic, conservative and sovereignist pole, which will fight in all the elections from 2024 to save freedom and for the economic reconstruction of Romania.

We call on Romanians everywhere, at home and abroad, to support this vital step to save democracy.

We ask all patriots fed up with the mockery and arrogance of the PSD-PNL to join and consciously involve themselves in the demolition of this dictatorial regime and in the reconstruction of the country.
