Samsung and Synopsys announced in a press release that mass production of 3nm chipsets is set to begin soon. It would be about a first Exynos processor manufactured on a new generation lithography process, although the two companies have been rather vague in their communication. I have details below.

Samsung collaborates with Synopsys, a firm specializing in electronics and automation design. With its help, the South Korean company will be able to improve its production process in factories and maximize the performance of chipsets. The release says that the two companies have reached a final design for this type of chipset, and mass production will begin soon.

It would be the first high-performance Exynos processor based on a 3nm lithography process. The named Samsung process will be used Gate All Around (GAA) for its realization. Samsung factories have already developed 3nm chipsets as early as 2022, but those were mainly used for crypto mining. A smartphone / tablet processor is much more complex in design and requires know-how to produce.

If all goes according to plan, we should see a 3nm Exynos 2500 integrated into the Galaxy S25 flagship series next year. Now, it remains to be seen how the processor will fare in daily use. Apple broke the ice yesterday by releasing a first CPU manufactured on a 3nm lithography process. It’s about the Apple M4, the processor on board the iPad Pro 11 and iPad Pro 13 (2024).
