Apple wants to strengthen its position in the field of artificial intelligence by developing its own chips for data centers, a step that could reshape how the company approaches AI processing needs. The project, called ACDC (Apple Chips in Data Center), has been in the works for several years and is working closely with TSMC to design and manufacture these critical components.

Although there is no clear timetable for the completion of the project, its importance is undeniable. Apple appears to be focusing on AI inference, meaning the ability to apply machine learning models to new data, as opposed to training AI models, a segment dominated by US giant Nvidia. That strategy could position Apple alongside other big tech companies like Google, which have developed their own chips to emancipate themselves from outside chip designers.

According to the Wall Street Journal, there are still uncertainties regarding the success of these efforts, but the company’s determination to innovate in AI technology is clear. CEO Tim Cook emphasized in February that Apple is investing significantly in AI, anticipating a major announcement in this area, likely at the Worldwide Developers Conference in June.

The moves come at a time when Apple is facing declining iPhone sales, but despite these challenges, the company reported better-than-expected financial performance in its latest fiscal quarter. Furthermore, Apple announced a $110 billion share buyback program, the largest in its history, which led to a surge in the stock price.
