The new feature, implemented in WhatsApp beta version 2.24.9.28 for Android, allows users to directly call contacts using mobile data network or Wi-Fi, without resorting to traditional mobile phone service. This is useful for those who have a limited number of minutes or are abroad, where roaming rates are significantly higher, writes Android Authority.

With this update, WhatsApp tries to eliminate the need to use the Android system’s call menu, making it easier to find and call contacts directly from the app.
