Camila Giorgi, secret retirement from tennis – WTA does not recognize the 32-year-old player

Camila played her last official match on the WTA circuit in March of this year: in Miami, the athlete from Italy was clearly defeated by Iga Swiatek (1-6, 1-6) in the second round.

Since that moment, Giorgi has not been seen at any tournament, and the press in Italy announced this week her secret retirement.

How did the Italian journalists reach the conclusion of the withdrawal? The player no longer appears as active on the ITIA website. The agency must know exactly where any athlete is in order to conduct unannounced anti-doping controls.

A tennis player can evade these controls on his own responsibility (after three violations he is automatically suspended) or if he has decided to withdraw from the performance sport.

According to Corriere della Sera, Giorgi is no longer listed as an active athlete as of May 7, the day she debuted at the WTA 1000 tournament in Rome (where she would normally have competed in front of her compatriots).

Taken by surprise by what happened, the WTA looked for the player, but Giorgi was nowhere to be found.

The cited source talks about the fact that the athlete’s father (Sergio – the one who was also her coach) was also called, as well as the brothers Leandro and Amadeus. Surprise: all the phones were switched off.

Corriere della Sera mentions that the tennis player was recently indicted by the Prosecutor’s Office in Vicenza. She is accused of falsifying her Covid-19 vaccination certificate.

In this context, there is a rumor that Giorgi would have already left Italy, an unconfirmed version so far.

Who is Camila Giorgi?

Born on December 30, 1991, in Macerata, Italy, Camila Giorgi won 430 matches over time and was defeated 319 times.

The highest was in the WTA hierarchy on the 36th place, on October 22, 2018.

She won 4 WTA titles in her career (2023 – Merida / 2021 – Montreal / 2018 – Linz / 2015 – ‘s-Hertogenbosch), and her best Grand Slam performance was the quarter-finals at Wimbledon in 2018 .

During his career, he collected only from tennis prizes the sum of $6,414,545.
