It was a great day for the players from Romania at the WTA tournament in Rome. Irina Begu, Sorana Cîrstea and Jaqueline Cristian won, and Ana Bogdan lost after a hard-fought match against Marketa Vondrousova, the Wimbledon champion.

The performances of the players from Romania did not go unnoticed, and Cristian Tudor Poepscu appreciated the effort of the athletes mentioned, especially noting the match played by Ana Bogdan.

“Romania Day in Rome

Irina beat Masarova, Draqueline beat Avanesyan, Sorana beat Fruhvirtova and Ana had one of the best matches of her career against reigning Wimbledon champion, Foro Italico 6 seed Markéta Vondroušová!

Impressive effort, short ones as good as those with which she responded to Vondroušova’s famous stoppages, rallies of more than 10 exchanges that she won by resisting with the lapel of the torpedoes sent with the forehand by the “iron arm” left-handed Czech. Ana Bogdan took out a Markéta smash moving the racket to her left hand and won the point!!! She led 3-1 in the deciding set, at which point she succumbed physically to the inexhaustible super-athlete Vondroušová, losing 6-4.

A defeat that I will remember better than many victories!”, wrote Cristian Tudor Poepscu on Facebook.

Next, Irina Begu will meet Elena Rybakina today in the second round, and in the third round the games Jaqueline Cristian – Cori Gauff, respectively Sorana Cîrstea – Marketa Vondrousova are scheduled.
