Surviving Hummels leads Dortmund into UCL final at Wembley after 11-year absence

--

Borussia Dortmund are the first team to go to the UEFA Champions League grand final at Wembley. Edin Terzic’s side managed to beat PSG again, with the same score as in the round match, with the yellow submarine awaiting the result of the other semi-final between Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.

Both formations made their presence felt in the final third in the first minutes of the game. Fullkrug restarted with a header towards Donnarumma’s goal after a set-piece, but the Italian keeper made an emotionless save.

At Kobel’s goal, the first signals were given by Goncalo Ramos and Kylian Mbappe, but even the Swiss goalkeeper had no problems keeping the ball.

The Germans’ reply came through Adeyemi, whose attempted volley from the edge of the box was blocked by a PSG defender.

Following a Parisian counter-attack, Ramos ended the phase with a shot that sent the ball quite close to the left post of Kobel’s goal.

Ryerson sent the ball into the outer side netting after a pass from Fullkrug.

After half an hour of play, a beautiful phase created by PSG found Dembele at the finish, but his shot left much to be desired.

10 minutes before half-time, Karim Adeyemi signed Dortmund’s biggest goal-scoring opportunity after a blistering counter-attack from the visitors. Extrema was denied, however, by the intervention of Donnarumma.

Hummels, a “survivor” alongside Marco Reus from Dortmund’s last UCL final in 2013 – ended in a 2-1 victory for the Bavarians – made a saving intervention inside the box when Mbappe received the ball in a position favorable.

Full video summary:

Just before the break, an attacking phase initiated by Ousmane Dembele came close to changing the scoreboard. The ball reached Mbappe, who passed to the edge of the box for Fabian Ruiz. The midfielder’s shot was deflected by Schlotterbeck into the corner.

Forced to attack to reduce the one-goal deficit, PSG started the second half energetically. Following a corner, Zaire-Emery missed a huge opportunity to score, the midfielder hitting the post of Kobel’s goal.

Dortmund’s reply would come shortly after and alter the scoreboard as well. Mats Hummels scored with a header following a Brandt corner.

Goncalo Ramos was close to making it 1-1 after a Vitinha foray into the final third. The Parisians started the offensive forcing, Nuno Mendes hitting the bar after a shot sent from distance.

The same Hummels put the ball into the goal a quarter of an hour before the end of regular time, but the assistant referee on the edge of the field indicated an obvious offside position where the German stopper was.

The presence of the French in the opposing box continued for good minutes, with Vitinha, Sergio Asenjo and Mbappe also trying Kobel’s goal.

After a set piece executed by Kang-In Lee, Marquinhos sent a header very close to the target.

Hakimi and Mbappe also threatened, the latter hitting the crossbar after a slight deflection from Kobel.

The siege continued, with Vitinha hitting the crossbar for the fourth time to save the visitors again.

Edin Terzic’s students lasted until the last second of the game without conceding a goal in the decisive match. Dortmund await the result of Real Madrid and Bayern Munich on Wednesday (May 8) in the second UEFA Champions League semi-final.
