David Popovici won 4 gold medals at the National Swimming Championships in Otopeni

In April, at the National Swimming Championships in Otopeni, David Popovici won 4 gold medals, after triumphing in the 50, 100, 200 and 400 meter races. In Otopeni, Popovici had the best performances since 2024 in his favorite events, 100 and 200 meters freestyle: 47 seconds and 86 hundredths, respectively 1 minute, 45 seconds and 10 hundredths.

After the competition, David Popivici also talked about the latest changes in his life, including losing the world record in the 100m freestyle, which now belongs to China’s Pan Zhanle, with a time of 46.80.

“At first, when I found out that my record was broken, of course I didn’t like it. I mean, no, I would have liked it to be just mine, but afterwards I was glad because it was somehow, I don’t know, something was lifted off my shoulders and I felt like I had something to fight for again.

I was no longer David Popovici, the world record holder, double world champion. I was David Popovici whose world record had just been dethroned. Great, let’s take it again! And it was a great motivator because I feel like I have something to fight for again.

I’m not anymore, I know it’s a pleonasm, but I’m not as perfect as the media sometimes likes to portray me. So I felt like I had something to fight for again, and that felt really nice. The training sessions from then on were very productive”, declared David Popovici.
