Ioan Neculaie, a businessman born in Codlea, was the patron of FC Brașov for many years. At the time when he was investing tens of millions of euros, the team from Brasov also recorded decent results, and under Neculaie’s command the only qualification in the European cups was recorded.
Despite the more than 30 million euros he invested in football, according to his words, Ioan Neculaie did not manage to win any trophies with FC Brașov. “I worked very hard to keep this team, I spent a lot of money and I didn’t even hear a nice word from a supporter. They were only shouting what the mayor or whoever was in charge suggested to them!
However, even though I was alone, I also had results. I took Brașov after 27 years to the European Cups, where we also played the famous “double” with Inter Milan.
I hope that another 27 years of absence of the team from the first division will not pass now”, declared Ioan Neculaie, for ProSportin the summer of 2023.
It should also be noted that Ioan Neculaie did not escape problems with the law either. In November 2017, he was sentenced by the Brașov Court of Appeal to one year and six months in prison, by merging two suspended sentences, for manslaughter and non-compliance with the arms and ammunition regime.
