The announcer at the Roda JC Kerkrade stadium made a huge blunder on Friday evening, mistakenly announcing the club’s promotion to the Dutch first division and causing euphoric fans to invade the pitch before they were woken up to reality, reports AFP.

Being in second place in the ranking, Roda bet on joining the Eredivisie after the victory against Cambuur, on Friday, with the score of 2-0, because at the same time Groningen, ranked third, was led 1-0 by Telstar.

At the end of the game, Roda’s announcer announced the promotion of the club, which caused the supporters to explode with joy.

But Groningen equalized in the min. 95 of the game, finished tied, 1-1. The ill-informed announcer then announced that Groningen were eventually beaten 2-1, prompting the crowd to invade the pitch.

“I should have checked better, but the internet connection is very weak here. I’m human,” justified the announcer.

Consequently, Roda will have to wait for the joy of promotion. In the standings, they lead Groningen by three points (but with a lower goal difference) before the last leg. The last stage schedules Roda’s move to Groningen.

The first place, Willem II Tilburg, ensured his qualification in the elite echelon.
