Man City crush Brighton to move within a point of leaders Arsenal
Manchester City went on a rampage on the south coast as they kept the race for a new Premier League title alive. No team has ever won four successive English crowns, but Pep Guardiola’s side are now ominously just one point behind leaders Arsenal with a game in hand after managing a 4-0 thrashing of Brighton & Hove Albion.
Brighton – Manchester City 0-4
The Seagulls – who had won just one of their previous 15 with City – saw an early chance through Danny Welbeck.
From that moment, there was a constant attack on only one goal, that of the hosts. After Nathan Aké cleared a through ball, the visitors took the lead when Kevin De Bruyne headed home from inside the penalty area after a welcome cross from Kyle Walker.
Foden soon made it 2-0 after controversially winning a free-kick from 20 yards. From set-piece, the England midfielder surprised Jason Steele after the ball was deflected by Pascal Groß.
The England international made it two minutes later after Bernardo Silva recovered a ball in the final third.
Roberto De Zerbi made a few substitutions at half-time, and as a result the game was a bit more balanced in the second half.
The Citizens still managed to create a multitude of chances, notably through Julián Álvarez, after a wasted chance the Argentine also scored after Walker’s action.
Worse was to come for Brighton, who were left fuming when João Pedro was denied a penalty despite apparently being tripped up in the box by Joško Gvardiol.
The home side’s winless streak has extended to five matches, further denting their hopes of climbing into the European places.
On the other hand, City are closing in on one point away from leaders Arsenal, but the citizens have one more stage to play until the end of the Premier League season.
