Sabalenka celebrates not facing girlfriend in Madrid: ‘I’m lucky’
The Belarusian had some nice words about her good friend Paula Badosa during the Mutua Madrid Open Media Day.
The good friendship between Aryna Sabalenka and Paula Badosa is well known in the tennis world. A few days ago, the Spaniard burst into tears in the arms of the reigning Masters 1000 champion in the Spanish capitalin midfield, after withdrawing from the tournament in Stuttgart.
At the Mutua Madrid Open Media Day, the first question put to the world number 2 was about the difficult time her friend is going through: “I feel like he is really like my soul mate. I think she’s the best, she’s the best. I hope from the bottom of my heart that she will return to the top and not have to fight with injuries anymore.” she said.
Shortly before, Badosa had already explained to the press the difficulty of living constantly with pain: “I suffered a lot with this injury. It is very complicated, at the end of the day that back injury is a chronic injury and it’s difficult,” said the New York-born tennis player.
Sabalenka wanted to show her all her support, although she did not fail to be happy that she will not play against Paula in the first round: “I really hope the best for her and I’m here for what she needs. I’m lucky I’m not meeting her on the first round here in Spain. Otherwise, it could be an interesting atmosphere in the stadium, so I’m lucky for me. And yes, I hope he does well here,” she said.
