The Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner continued his fantastic debut of the season, managing to win the trophy at the ATP Masters 1,000 tournament in Miami (USA), endowed with prizes worth 8,995,555 dollars, in the final of which he defeated, on Sunday, in two sets, 6-3, 6-1, against Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov.

Winner of the Australian Open in January and then the ATP 500 in Rotterdam in February, Sinner has lost just one of his 23 matches in 2024 and will be the new world No. 2 starting today, surpassing the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz.

Funny dialogue between Sinner and a journalist, after the trophy won in Miami

At the press conference, a journalist wanted to know what is more important for the Italian player: the title itself or the fact that he climbed to the best position of his career, the 2nd place in the world meaning also the best position in the history of Italian tennis, to masculine. Only the journalist messed up, “promoting” Jannik as the world leader, which prompted a funny response from the 22-year-old.

Journalist: What is more important to you, the first title in Miami after two lost finals or the fact that you will be world number 1 tomorrow?

Sinner: World Number 1?

Journalist: No, sorry, number 2.

Sinner: Unforced error (no laughs). It means a lot to be on 2, but more important is the performance, especially since I played two such good matches in the semi-finals and the final.

To be number 2 ATP is fantastic, I never thought I would get here, I am very happy to be in this position. There are special moments, it’s always special when you win a tournament.

After two failures in the finals in Miami, in 2021 (against the Polish Hubert Hurkacz) and 2023 (against the Russian Daniil Medvedev), Sinner lifted the trophy for the first time at the competition in Florida, adding to his record also his second title in the Masters category 1,000, after the one won last year at the Canadian Open.

Sinner dominated on Friday, in the semifinals, the Russian Daniil Medvedev (world number 4), whom he passed 6-1, 6-2, and on Sunday he made a new show of strength in front of Dimitrov, displaying a complete game, precise and powerful.

After the success of Carlos Alcaraz at Indian Wells, where the Spaniard inflicted the only defeat of the year on Sinner, in the semi-finals, the American circuit on the hard court confirmed that the Spaniard and the Italian are the undisputed leaders of the new generation of players in world tennis.

Alcaraz and Sinner will now have to prove their qualities also on clay, in front of the Serbian Novak Djokovic, the current leader of the world ranking, with a lead of over 1,000 points over the Italian, who is to return to the competition after a disappointing start to the year (defeat in the semi-finals at the Australian Open, then in the third round at Indian Wells and absent from Miami).

If he continues to develop at the same level as until now, Sinner can hope to get closer to the leader’s seat of the ATP ranking, with many points collected on clay, a surface on which he did not shine in 2023, being eliminated in the semifinals at Monte Carlo, in the quarters in Barcelona, in the round of 16 in Rome and, especially, in the second round at the Grand Slam at Roland Garros.
