On Monday, April 29, 2024, His Excellency Mons. Giampiero Gloder, Apostolic Nuncio agreed for Romania and the Republic of Moldova. Msgr. Giampiero Gloder, titular Archbishop of Telde, was appointed by Pope Francis on February 23, 2024 as Apostolic Nuncio to Romania and the Republic of Moldova.

His Excellency Giampiero Gloder was welcomed at “Henri Coandă” International Airport (Otopeni) by His Excellency Mihai Sîrbu, Director of the Protocol Department within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania, His Excellency Botond Zakonyi, Hungarian Ambassador and Vice Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, Mons. . Tuomo T. Vimpari, Charge d’affaires of the Apostolic Nunciature. From the side of the Catholic Church, HM Aurel Percă, Roman Catholic Metropolitan Archbishop of Bucharest and Vice-President of the Bishops’ Conference from Romania, were present; ÎPS Gergely Kovacs, Roman Catholic Archbishop of Alba Iulia; PS Mihai Frățilă, Greek-Catholic Bishop of Bucharest and Father Francisc Ungureanu, General Secretary of the Romanian Bishops’ Conference.

The Apostolic Nuncio agreed in Romania and the Republic of Moldova, Mons. Giampiero Gloder, was born in Asiago, Italy in 1958 and was ordained a priest in 1983. After studying dogmatic theology, he entered the diplomatic service in 1993. The diplomatic career of Mons. Gloder held positions in Guatemala and within the Secretariat of State of the Holy See. In 2013, he was appointed President of the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy and titular Archbishop of Telde. Pope Francis consecrated him bishop in the same year. The service brought to the Church by Mons. Gloder continued with appointments in the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples and as vice-camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church (2014). In 2019, Msgr. Gloder became Apostolic Nuncio to Cuba, a mission he fulfilled until he was appointed as Apostolic Nuncio to Romania and the Republic of Moldova (February 2024).

Archbishop Gloder holds a degree in canon law from the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas and a doctorate in dogmatic theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University. In addition to his native Italian, he speaks French, English and Spanish.

The position of Apostolic Nuncio in Romania was vacant from April 13, 2023, after the end of the mission of His Excellency Mons. Miguel Maury Buendia, currently Apostolic Nuncio in Great Britain.

The Apostolic Nuncio is the permanent diplomatic representative of the Holy See next to a State, i.e. the head of the diplomatic mission. According to the norms of international law approved by the Vienna Convention of 1961, the Apostolic Nuncio has the rank of ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary, with the same prerogatives as the ambassadors of any other State. In Romania, the Apostolic Nuncio is also the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps.
