Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini said on Wednesday that French President Emmanuel Macron was a “dangerous” politician who should “treat himself”, after the Elysee leader spoke again of the possibility of sending troops to Ukraine to support its army in the war with Russia, reports AFP, quoted by Agerpres.

A regular of the statements that make a discordant note towards the pro-Kiev policy of the head of the Italian government Georgia Meloni, the leader of the far-right League party reacted in this way in front of the press after the statements of Macron and the former Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti, who also stated that, at some point, it might be “necessary” to send foreign troops to Ukraine.

“They should treat each other,” Salvini said of Macron and Monti. “Those who have this opinion (that troops should be sent to Ukraine – ed.) and say it as if it were something normal, it is equally valid for Macron and Monti, are dangerous”, believes the Italian vice-prime minister.

“If they want to fight so much, then they should go to Ukraine, tomorrow, they are expected there,” added Matteo Salvini, who also accused Emmanuel Macron in March of “representing a danger to our country and to our continent “.

Salvini’s reaction since then had come after, at the end of an international conference in support of Ukraine held at the end of February in Paris, Macron suggested for the first time the possibility of some allied states of Kiev sending troops to Ukraine, since, he reasoned, “everything possible must be done so that Russia does not win this war”.

In an interview given last week to The Economist publication, the French president reaffirmed that he does not rule out the possibility of sending foreign troops to support Ukraine.

In his statement on Wednesday in which he criticized Macron and Monti, the Italian deputy prime minister instead praised the speech delivered by Russian President Vladimir Putin at the ceremony in which he was re-invested in office on Tuesday. “Yesterday, Putin invited, among other things, to dialogue and I hope that 2024 will be the year of peace, not of soldiers going to die in Ukraine,” Salvini also said.
