According to rumors, a search engine based on Open AI’s generative artificial intelligence could be launched at any moment. The search.chatgpt.com domain has been created, it reports Corriere della Sera.

Google has been unchallenged at the top of the search engine rankings for nearly twenty years. Its market share hovers around 90%, no one has ever been able to crack it.

But now a new competitor could be on the way, which could turn into the biggest threat to his reign as well as his main source of income.

Open AI is rumored to be ready to launch its own search engine based on ChatGpt. And this will not happen in a few months, but in a few days.

Coincidentally – if it were true – at the very time when Google stages the most important event of the year, the I/O developer conference scheduled for May 14, where the most important item on the agenda will obviously be , generative artificial intelligence.

On May 3, the “Hacker News” forum noted the creation of the domain “search.chatgpt.com” among ChatGpt’s SSL certificates, a protocol that authenticates its identity and security. At the moment, the address does not correspond to any platform – the classic ‘not found’ message appears – but rumors regarding an imminent landing of Open AI on the search engine market have been circulating for some time.

The Information site has been talking about this since February. The domain could mean several things: it could be used as an internal tool, for research, or its certification could be a way to ensure that that domain – perhaps one day useful – stays in the company’s hands and is not used by another company. The third option: will be the address of the next opponent of Google.

A search engine based on ChatGpt would be very similar to what we can already experience on Bing, Microsoft’s search engine that has been enriched with Copilot, a chatbot that, among other things, exploits Open AI’s own language models. We can imagine that in the ChatGpt search engine, there will be a lot of space dedicated to chatbot-generated answers, with a number of in-depth links that the reader might find useful. How useful they will be will depend on the correctness and comprehensiveness of the answers compiled by artificial intelligence.

A precedent already exists: it’s called Perplexity, and it’s a set of artificial intelligence just like a search engine created by a startup in which Jeff Bezos has invested heavily. Already 10 million people a month find it useful and it’s a good case study, especially for Google.

If a small start-up managed to achieve these numbers, what could a colossus like Open AI do? However, Google itself is aware that the era of search engines as we know them today is coming to an end and is integrating Gemini into the results: we can expect more news at the I/O conference on May 14.

Once again, Open AI could give an unexpected boost to the entire industry. It already did in November 2022 with the launch of ChatGpt. All the giants were working on generative AI models, but none were ready to make them public. The race to keep up with Open AI has not yet stopped, so much so that proposals for new functionality and tools continue to emerge.

According to a CNBC investigation, the situation is becoming unbearable, especially for engineers working on artificial intelligence models, who are being asked to work impossible shifts, sending them increasingly into burnout. And the situation is the same at Google, Microsoft, Amazon and Apple. But also in the smallest companies and start-ups.

The problem is that even the stock market performance of these companies now depends on their technology strategy. And so there’s often a rush for rivals that are more of a demo for investors than an actual new feature that will be useful to users. The pressure on those working with algorithms has become unbearable, engineers say.
