Prince Paul was with his wife, Lia, when he was spotted by the Police.

The head of the Romanian Police, Benone Matei, was asked on Monday, April 29, in a press conference, how Prince Paul was caught.

“There was an exchange of information with the Malta Police. Following the information sent by the Romanian police, the person was located in a resort. He was later detained and will be referred to the court in Malta. The Romanian police located him and sent information in real time to the colleges in Malta”, answered Benone Matei. He specified that “from the data we have”, Prince Paul “did not resist”.

The Secretary of State in the MAI, Bogdan Despescu, added that the courts “will order measures accordingly”. “Immediately after a decision, the structures of the Ministry of Internal Affairs will take over the person,” he added.

Prince Paul of Romania, sentenced in December 2020 to 3 years and 4 months in prison in the case of the illegal retrocession of the Royal Farm in Băneasa and fled to France, was caught in Malta, judicial sources told Libertatea on Sunday, April 28.

“He was found in a resort in Malta, he is to be presented to the prosecutor for detention and then they will start the formalities to hand him over to us. The procedure can take up to 6 months”, said the cited sources.

Paul from Romania had been on the run for almost 4 years in France. In November 2023, he asked a Paris court not to extradite him to Romania, a request accepted by the French court, which thus refused his extradition.

Last fall, the Paris Court of Appeal invoked the illegal composition of the court panel from Romania. More precisely, the fact that one of the judges did not take the oath at the inauguration, judicial sources explained to Libertatea at the time.
