Based on rising temperatures in Europe, mosquito species that spread “tropical” diseases like malaria and dengue fever are increasingly spreading their territory northward. A mosquito that could spread malaria is already present in Romania, and the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has also confirmed the spread of the Asian tiger mosquito in several counties.

Malaria and dengue fever epidemics in Europe were a possibility based on rising temperatures on the continent, but have become a probability in the following decades, as the species of mosquitoes that can carry and transmit these diseases to humans are expanding their territory, including in Romania.

The latest alarm was raised by Professor Rachel Lowe, who leads the Global Health Resilience Group at the Barcelona Supercomputing Centre. The expert says that Europe is not prepared for the spread of malaria and dengue fever, and the year-round establishment of mosquitoes that can transmit these diseases is already confirmed in more and more European countries.

“With the weak response to climate change, we can expect an increase in cases and deaths from diseases such as malaria and dengue across Europe. We need to anticipate possible pandemics and intervene in time to prevent them”, explained Professor Rachel Lowe, quoted by The Guardian.

In Europe, the Asian tiger mosquito has spread over a significant territory or completely in countries such as Austria, Switzerland, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Portugal and Spain. The reason why these mosquitoes spread easily is the increasingly rare presence of frost during the winter, which kills them along with the laid eggs.

Where dangerous mosquitoes are present in Romania

Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) is already confirmed to be found in the following counties: Bihor, Prahova, Giurgiu, Ilfov and Bucharest, according to data collected by the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control. It is also present in Sibiu, but there have been no reports of its existence in Alba, Brașov, Cluj and Hunedoara counties. For the rest of the country’s counties, there is currently insufficient information.

The Anopheles pulcherrimus species that can spread malaria is present throughout Romania and the Republic of Moldova, according to data from the World Health Organization.
