Europuls – The European Expertise Center launches the 12th edition of the Eurosfat Forum, which this year acquires an international dimension through Global Forum on Modern Direct Democracy which will take place for the first time in Eastern Europe. The international event will take place between May 15-18, 2024, in Bucharest, Romania and will host substantial electoral debates, as well as sessions on multiple topics related to the level of trust in democracy, Europuls reports through a press release.

The Global Forum on Modern Direct Democracy is a participatory conference that annually attracts over 500 participants from over 60 countries, being organized by civil society organizations in partnership with local institutions. In Romania, the conference will be hosted by Europuls – the Center for European Expertise, the NGO Democracy International, Bucharest City Hall, the University of Bucharest and the Swiss Democracy Foundation.

The official sessions of the Forum will take place between 15 and 18 May 2024. With 72 debate sessions and 200 speakers, the central theme of the Global Democracy Forum will revolve around the concept of “trust in democracy”. Several key topics will be discussed, such as:

  • The future of Romania in the EU – electoral debate with the candidates for the European Parliament elections
  • exchange of good practices between mayors
  • the participation of young people in the national and European decision-making process
  • technology and its influence on mass media
  • trust in political representatives, institutions and mass media
  • the implications of the war in Ukraine and the consequences it has on Romania, Moldova, the Black Sea region
  • the future of security in the Black Sea region, as well as energy prospects
  • the future of cohesion policy and the development of European regions

Among the speakers expected at the 2024 edition of the Forum are: HE John Cornet d’Elzius – Ambassador of the Kingdom of Belgium to Romania, HE Ilhor Prokopchuk – Ambassador of Ukraine to Romania, HE Victor Chirilă – Ambassador of the Republic of Moldova to Romania, HE Massimo Baggi – Ambassador of the Confederation Swiss in Romania, Corina Crețu – Member of the European Parliament and former European Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms, Roxana Mînzatu – Secretary of State, Chancellery of the Prime Minister, Government of Romania, Ovidiu Cîmpean – Secretary of State, Ministry of Investments and European Projects, Radu Mihaiu – Mayor of the Sector 2, Bucharest Municipality, Corina Ene – Mayor of Căbești commune, Daniela Vidaicu, Executive Director of the Soros Moldova Foundation, Raimar Wagner – Project Coordinator, Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom Romania, Liliana Palihovici – President of the Virtutes Civilis Moldova Institute, Mihail Sirkeli – Director Executive Piligrim-Demo, Lucian Mîndruță, Dragoș Anastasiu.

Between May 13 and 15, participants are invited to take part in 3 optional tours: a historical tour of the city of Bucharest, an experience exchange and a tour of the Youth Capital of Romania 2024 – the city of Ploiești and a study visit to EFdeN – where the participants they will visit EFdeN solar houses.

The period of the international conference, at the end of May 2024, marks a significant electoral framework for Romania, with European, local, national and presidential elections to be held in the country. The event will represent a unique opportunity for participants to learn about the democratic landscape of the region, giving them the chance to delve into the political history of Bucharest and Romania.

The Global Forum on Modern Direct Democracy, which has taken place on five continents since 2008, will bring together in Bucharest a diverse global community of activists, decision-makers and experts who will address significant issues at the international level, which are closely related to direct rights to democratic and civic participation.
