The Rector of SNSPA, Remus Pricopie, sent a message on Tuesday on the occasion of awarding the Distinguished International Leadership Award, for the year 2024, to the President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, at the Atlantic Council gala, institutional partner of SNSPA.

“The Atlantic Council, one of the most influential ‘think tank’ organizations in the world, decided a few weeks ago that the Distinguished International Leadership Award, for the year 2024, a prize informally called the ‘Political Oscar’, should be given to the President Romania, Mr. Klaus Werner Iohannis. The decision has several arguments behind it, which the Atlantic Council has already publicly presented and which will be reinforced on the occasion of the awarding ceremony of this award, which will take place on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, in Washington DC, and at which more than 600 guests from 60 countries participated.

I believe that this event, along with the meeting of President Iohannis with President Biden, at the White House, and the meeting with the President of the House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, represents one of the most important political moments of Romania this year. Beyond the official agenda, there is also a special symbolic dimension, with significant implications for our country. Romania is in the middle of some major geopolitical phenomena, and the firm, but non-provocative positions towards the war started by Russia in Ukraine or towards the political slippages, including from some European states, have made our country contribute decisively to guaranteeing security in the region, to maintaining dialogue and unity within the European Union and NATO. Romania managed to reconfirm, every time, its attachment to democratic values, isolate extremist tendencies and build a platform of political stability, for stormy times.

The ‘Political Oscar’, offered by the Atlantic Council, and President Joe Biden’s appreciation for the President of Romania have the value of a double invitation.

The first is related to the leadership attributes of President Iohannis, which must be capitalized, at the Euro-Atlantic level, and after the completion of the second mandate at the head of the Romanian State.

The second is the urge to continue the same way of doing politics in Romania after the 2024 elections. Romania’s balance weighed the excesses of other countries in the region. Therefore, it is fundamental that Romania remains a pivotal state of democracy and is led by serious people, interested in the public good.

Romania can face the most prosperous period in its history, if it simultaneously fulfills two conditions: (i) not to deviate from the democratic path assumed after December 1989; and (ii) to invest trust in a new generation of political leaders, educated and trained on the Western model, able to avoid risks and capitalize on opportunities, in the interest of Romanian citizens and in full respect of the alliances of which Romania is a part (EU , NATO, etc.).”
