King Charles is marking one year since his coronation without pomp. It is not yet known if he will meet his son Harry, who is coming to London for the Invictus Games

--

Monday marks one year since the coronation ceremony of King Charles III, but the 75-year-old British sovereign prefers much less pomp this time after a year full of unexpected events. The King will celebrate in low-key style with close friends at Windsor. Even his wife, Queen Camilla, is unlikely to be present as she is with her own family at her private home in Wiltshire, Ray Mill House, writes The Daily Mail.

The British tabloid has learned that Her Majesty wants to mark the day “after her mother’s model”, without too much fuss, as her rise is so intrinsically linked to the sad loss of Queen Elizabeth.

It is also not yet known whether he will meet his youngest son, Prince Harry, who is expected to come from the US to London this week for the Invictus Games, which he sponsors.

Buckingham Palace will mark the anniversary of the King’s Coronation on social media, while military ceremonies will take place in London. The King’s Royal Horse Artillery will perform a royal salute with 41 guns and 71 horses firing six WW1-era field guns. At the Tower of London, the Honorable Artillery Company will fire a royal salute of 62 guns. Other tributes will be held in Edinburgh, Cardiff, York and Hillsborough, in Northern Ireland.

But there won’t be too many “celebrations” in the family, especially from the king himself, who will more than likely enjoy a private dinner.

Charles returns to London on Monday after being cleared by doctors to resume more public engagements as he continues his cancer treatment. Over the weekend, the press wrote that Prince William would be worried about the fact that his father is taking on too many tasks.

For his part, Prince Harry is likely to fly to the British capital on Monday, ahead of a service at St Paul’s Cathedral on Wednesday afternoon to mark the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games, but it is not yet known whether he will meet again with his father, so far nothing has been entered in this regard in the official agenda. Buckingham Palace has repeatedly declined to comment, determined not to inflame public discourse around the subject. When, at the beginning of this year, King Charles announced that he had been diagnosed with cancer, Prince Harry came from the United States to London and met for an hour with his father, after which he returned to the US the next day. Harry later told Good Morning America that he hoped his father’s illness could “reunite” the family.

What is known is that an extremely busy week awaits the king, notes The Daily Mail. He has official meetings on Wednesday morning, followed by his expected appearance at the first garden party of the season at Buckingham Palace. Immediately afterwards he will meet with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and hold the weekly meeting of the Privy Council. The Daily Mail has also learned that the king has an as-yet-unannounced public engagement for Thursday, after which he will retire, most likely to Windsor, to continue his recovery.

It is possible that a meeting with his youngest son will still be scheduled, especially if Harry will personally ask to meet his father, but in any case, any such meeting will be short-lived, points out the British tabloid.

As for Prince William, he does not intend to meet his brother. He will be in Windsor for an investiture ceremony before heading to the West Country for more official duties. The two brothers have an extremely cold relationship, especially after the appearance of Harry’s memoir, Book.

For her part, Queen Camilla was not present when Harry met the king last time and is unlikely to be around this week.

A Mail on Sunday poll showed King Charles enjoys a majority vote of confidence, with most Britons thinking he is doing a good job. The poll, carried out to mark the first anniversary of his Coronation, shows a strong rise in support for the monarch over the past 12 months. Around 60% of those polled believe that the United Kingdom should retain the monarchy, with only 28% of them preferring a republic.

A TERRIBLE YEAR FOR KING CHARLES

On May 6, 2023, England celebrated the accession to the throne of its new king. After a sumptuous ceremony in Westminster Abbey, King Charles III, already officially sovereign for seven months, greeted the British people from the balcony of Buckingham Palace, on the arm of his wife, Queen Camilla.

At the beginning of June, King Charles made his first post-Coronation visit to Romania.

In September, France hosted the sovereign’s first state visit. He was received at the foot of the Arc de Triomphe by Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte Macron, and in the evening he attended a banquet in his honor.

The month of November was full of commitments. Between a four-day state visit to Kenya and his 75th birthday celebrations, the king attended the annual opening of the British Parliament. “My government’s priority is to take the difficult but long-term necessary decisions to change this country,” he told politicians, as opponents of the monarchy protested outside Parliament.

2023 foreshadowed a relatively serene start to the reign. But 2024 changed everything. At the end of January, the king was admitted to the Clinic of London hospital for an operation for benign prostatic hyperplasia. Three days later, smiling, the King left the clinic with his wife on his arm. But the sense of relief of the British was short-lived. A week later, a press release announced that the king was dealing with a form of cancer.

Forced to give up his public appearances, the king discreetly completed his convalescence between London, Scotland and Windsor. In Windsor, he also met his daughter-in-law, Kate Middleton, before she publicly revealed that she too has cancer. The two had been admitted to the Clinic of London almost simultaneously in January, and Charles had visited his 42-year-old daughter-in-law in hospital, who had undergone surgery a few days before him.

Queen Camilla, a great support of the King in private, was also a great support in public, traveling far and wide across England to meet her people.

Charles III, frustrated that his convalescence was dragging on, couldn’t help but miss some important events. At the end of March, for example, he presided over the royal procession to Saint George’s Chapel in Windsor to attend the Easter service.

After a “period of treatment and recovery”, during which the British people showed him sympathy, the king returned at the end of April. He resumed his public duties in the company of Camila, smiling and visibly fit.

On June 15, he is expected to appear on the balcony of Buckingham Palace for the Trooping the Color military ceremony, which also serves to celebrate the sovereign’s birthday. At the end of June, he will receive the Emperor and Empress of Japan. The state visit of the imperial couple was supposed to take place in the spring of 2020, but the pandemic forced its postponement, writes Paris Match.
