Only 34 kilometers from Timișoara, in the middle of a picturesque forest area, is the Buziaș resort, the resort with a rich history and tradition in spa treatments. Buziașul was and remains one of the most important spa destinations in Romania, even if it has declined strongly in recent years, just like other spa resorts, managing to be reborn with great difficulty.

The Buziaș resort has been known since the time of the Romans under the name of Ahibis. Declared a spa town in 1819, Buziașul has been visited over time by numerous personalities, including the crowned heads of European royal families.

It is said that Princess Sissi, in love with the beauty of the resort, visited it often for walks in the large park in the center of the city.

Small steps for the revival of the resort

The mineral waters from Buziaș are recognized for their therapeutic effects on health. Chemical analyzes carried out in 1805 revealed the high content of carbon dioxide, calcium, iron and sodium. These waters are beneficial in treating a wide range of conditions, including cardiovascular disease, neurological conditions, digestive disorders, kidney and gynecological conditions.

The resort experienced a dark period after the Revolution of 1989. The projects that could return Buziașul to the top of the Romanian resorts are appearing, but their pace and development are quite cumbersome. Most of the old hotels are dilapidated and locked.

An investment that repaired the tarnished image of Buziaș

Built in 1875 by order of Emperor Franz Joseph, the wooden colonnade was rehabilitated in 2017 and is an ideal place for walks in the resort’s Dendrological Park.

The colonnade connects Izvorul Josif, Hotel Phoenix, bazaar, Izvorul Mihai and Casino, having the role of protecting promenade lovers from precipitation or the sun, but also a beneficial effect in spa treatments.

Similar colonnades can be found in Karlovy Vary and Baden-Baden, but the impressive length of the colonnade in Buziaș (500 meters) makes it unique in Europe.

5 million euros, in the Dendrological Park

The park covers an area of 20 hectares and is one of the few places of its kind in Timiș County. At the beginning of this year, a rehabilitation project of almost 5 million euros from European funds was completed, which included the complete change of the alleys, 18,000 square meters of cubic stone, a new modern artesian fountain and the complete change of lighting and furniture urban.

4.6 kilometers of streets around the park were also rehabilitated in this project.

A special element that tourists were and are attracted to were the numerous squirrels named “Mariana”.

In recent years, the City Hall together with the Buziaș Area Development Association have been making efforts to repopulate the park with squirrels and organize the annual Squirrel Festival. Even this year more pairs will be brought. Mayor Sorin Muntean says that the plans are for the introduction of approximately 25 red-brown squirrels, specific to the Carpathian area.

“I understand from the specialists that they have to have an acclimatization period, somewhere around eight to nine months. They will be kept in special aviaries for acclimatization. And now we are in this discussion about how to proceed. We have a place to get them , but in the first phase we found only Canadian squirrels, and those are not like ours and they don’t adapt. They must be reddish, reddish-brown, Carpathian. These are the squirrels from Buziaș, said Sorin Muntean, the mayor of the city of Buziaș.

The project that would make Buziaș a top tourist attraction

However, the local administration is working on a project that would put Buziașul on the top of the resorts in Romania. It is about an aquapark.

“We have already started working on the Technical Project. We had a Prefeasibility Study here for the aquapark, but it has to be rethought, undersized because the money is less than the initial forecast. The money for the Technical Project will finally be included in the total cost of the investment”, the mayor of Buziaș, Sorin Munteanu, told deBanat.

It should be noted that, in Buziaș, the first steps to build an aquapark began in 2017, the idea being announced by the mayor of Munteanu in 2016. Then the Government adopted a tourism masterplan, and among the 140 objectives was an aquapark at Buzias This project is at an advanced stage, having, as I mentioned, a pre-feasibility study.

According to the Buziaș project, the location for the aquapark is 3.2 hectares, the surface built on the ground is 4,750 square meters, there will be several outdoor pools, but also indoor pools for the winter period. There will be an outdoor beach-type pool with intermittent waves of 600 square meters, outdoor pools with slides, outdoor pools for children, indoor pools with normal water and mineral water.
