The Romanian Police, through the Institute for Research and Crime Prevention, started a study that aimed to describe the habits of using the Internet by the adult population in Romania and identify its vulnerabilities.

The research aimed to describe the behaviors of using the Internet, especially those that represent vulnerabilities in terms of online safety, identifying the most frequent crimes that Internet users face. According to the IGPR, among those who use the Internet frequently, 84.3% read emails and news, and 80.6% access social networks when using the Internet, these being the most frequent activities performed. At the same time, approximately 50% of respondents buy or sell goods and services online, use online banking services, watch movies and series or pay bills.

88.8% of the respondents believe that they are very well or relatively well prepared to use the Internet safely, without becoming a victim of crimes, but the analysis of the answers shows that not all of them take the necessary safety measures. When shopping online, about a third of respondents don’t pay attention to reviews left by other customers/buyers, don’t check if the store page is real, and don’t check the site’s security features. The study shows that most people who use the Internet daily understand the risks that certain online behaviors have, but minimize the dangers.

The study also shows that around 14% of users think that it is not at all dangerous to post personal photos on social networks or connect to public Wi-Fi networks, 1 in 10 people think that it is not at all dangerous to download pirated content, and 8.8% of respondents ignore the risks of keeping passwords to various online accounts on file stored on Internet-connected devices. When asked about basic safety measures, 90.1% stated that they do not open links received from unknown email addresses, 89.9% avoid providing personal data on various sites, or through social networks ( 83.2%)

Regarding security measures while surfing the Internet, 39.5% of users who use the Internet every day do not change their passwords regularly, and 42.1% of respondents admit that they use the same password for several accounts. As an additional measure of protection, only 27.4% of users use two-step authentication, while 18.9% prefer to use services that do not require them to implement this security measure.

Regarding victimization via the Internet, 40.6% of respondents stated that they had not faced any of the victimization situations related to racist/hateful posts/comments towards other people, the appearance of pornographic materials , trying to get people to give them their card or account details. In a large proportion, (62.2%) the respondents of the study stated that if they became the victim of a cyber attack, they would seek the help of the police, a fact that shows that the majority of the people surveyed trust and understand to report these facts to the police .

Thus, more than 80% of respondents use the Internet for information and socializing, about half of them use the Internet for making purchases, Internet banking or paying bills, and most Internet users declare that they have a very cautious attitude regarding game purchases or cryptocurrency transactions. However, when asked to rate their digital skills, 9 out of 10 users feel they are well or very well prepared to use the internet safely.
