The government has approved the construction of a border road bridge with Ukraine over the Tisa river, with the Romanian end in the Teplița area, in Sighetu Marmației, Mihai Constantin, the spokesperson of the Executive, announced on Tuesday. The works execution contract has already been signed for the Romanian side and has a completion date of November 2024, following which, based on this agreement, the works will also begin on the Ukrainian side.

The agreement between Romania and Ukraine regarding the construction of this bridge was signed in Kyiv on October 18, 2023.

The normative act approves the agreement between Romania and Ukraine regarding the construction of the border road bridge over the Tisa river, in the area of ​​Sighetu Marmaţiei (Romania) – Bila Tserkva (Albä-Ukraine Church).

  • “The bridge will be built in the Teplița area of ​​Sighetu-Marmației, its aim is to create a modern communication path for the regional development of the area, to streamline traffic, increase user safety and reduce travel times”, announced the Government.

Based on the Agreement, a Joint Commission will be established, which will aim to coordinate all activities related to the construction of the Objective as well as provide recommendations to the parties. The Joint Commission will have 2 co-chairs and will be composed of authorized persons of both parties, on a parity basis.

The works execution contract has already been signed for the Romanian side and has a completion date of November 2024, following which, based on this agreement, the works will also begin on the Ukrainian side.

24 Ukrainians died trying to cross the border to Romania on the Tisa river, Kiev claims

Around 30 Ukrainians died trying to illegally cross Ukraine’s borders and avoid fighting in the war against Russia that began in 2022, the spokesperson of the Ukrainian border service told the Ukrinform news agency, quoted by News.ro.

Of these, 24 died trying to reach Romania by crossing the Tisa River, reports Reuters.

“Some lost their lives while trying to cross a mountain river or cross the mountains,” Andrii Demcenko said, according to a Ukrinform news report, transmitted Monday evening. “In total, since the large-scale invasion began, about 30 people have died trying to cross the border illegally,” the official said.

With some exceptions, Ukrainian men between the ages of 18 and 60 are not allowed to leave the country because they could be drafted to fight under Ukraine’s martial law.
