“Pista Astra”: 6 km with lane for cyclists, 150 bicycles on the route

--

4 years of redesign and 11.66 million lei lost: the works on the first route for cyclists in the municipality of Brasov are finally starting

After approximately four years of studies and analyses, Braşov City Hall issued the order to start work on Route 1 for bicycles in the city, which will connect the Poienelor RATBV Terminal and the Civic Center, at the Braşov Station.
The route will have a length of 6 km and 3 bicycle rental/parking points. The works will be carried out by Valdek Impex SRL, the value of the contract being 11,669,887 lei, including VAT (the estimated value was 14.13 million lei including VAT). The company is from Covasna County and has also executed a contract for the City Hall, in 2023, for asphalting in the northern area of Braşov.

Separately and between cars: how will the delimitation be done
The construction of this cycle track will be done on the road side, delimited from road traffic by longitudinal markings and prefabricated rubber profiles, over which, if necessary, intervention vehicles can pass. In areas where the size of the streets does not allow the creation of an exclusive bicycle lane, traffic will be shared with motor vehicles, on the carriageway, where visible transverse markings will be set up, at a maximum distance of 25 meters, doubled by road signs.

On which streets will the cycling track pass?
The investment consists in the realization of the integrated infrastructure for cycling and pedestrian traffic with a cumulative length of 6.0 km on the Terminal Poienelor route, Poienelor street, roundabout (MC Donald’s), Saturn boulevard, Minerva street, Crinului street, Micsunelelor street, Lâmâiţei street, Brânduşelor street, Alexandru Vlahuţă boulevard, Gării boulevard, Victoriei boulevard, Mihail Kogălniceanu boulevard, connection with the bike path that connects the Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the historic center.
Also, 520 traffic signs warning and informing about the existence of bicycle lanes on the route will be installed.

3 bicycle rental points
“This is the first track in Braşov that will be laid out according to standards and that has continuity, connecting several neighborhoods with the city’s areas of interest”declared the mayor of Brasov, Allen Coliban.
Also within this project, 150 bicycles will be purchased, 50 for each of the three rental points.
The works on this route will last 4 months.

Project delayed for many years
For this project, started in 2018, Braşov City Hall obtained European funding through the Operational Program 2014 – 2021 in March 2020, during the mandate of former mayor George Scripcaru. After the local elections in 2020, the project was blocked by the current administration, on the grounds that the technical solutions were not appropriate.
The works should have been ready by December 31, 2023, but, as this did not happen, the Braşov City Hall requested at the end of last year the inclusion of the project in the European budget cycle 2021 – 2027. The amount related to the investment will be provided from the local budget of the municipality of Braşov, following that, if the request for “phasing” is approved (the transition from financing in the European budget cycle 2014 – 2021 to the European budget cycle 2014 – 2027) the money will later be recovered from the Center Regional Program 2021-2027.
