“He was found in a resort in Malta, he is to be presented to the prosecutor for detention and then they will start the formalities to hand him over to us. The procedure can take up to 6 months”, said the cited sources.

Paul from Romania had been on the run for almost 4 years in France. In November 2023, he asked a Paris court not to extradite him to Romania, a request accepted by the French court, which thus refused his extradition.

Last fall, the Paris Court of Appeal invoked the illegal composition of the court panel from Romania. More precisely, the fact that one of the judges did not take the oath at the inauguration, judicial sources explained to Libertatea at the time.

Prince Paul appears on the website of the Romanian Police, under “Persons pursued”. He was caught following the cooperation between the Romanian Police and the Maltese Police.

What are the accusations in the Ferma Băneasa file

Paul of Romania was placed under international prosecution on December 18, 2020, one day after he was definitively sentenced to three years and four months in prison with execution in the case of the illegal retrocession of the Royal Farm from Băneasa and the Snagov forest.

The accusations concerned crimes committed in the period 2006-2013 “in various forms of participation, in the interest of obtaining some properties of great value, among which the Snagov forest and the Royal Băneasa Farm, claimed without right by the defendant Al României Paul Philippe”, the press release stated DNA.

In this case, 18 people were convicted, including Israeli businessmen Tal Silberstein and Beny Steinmetz, and the damage to the state was estimated by the prosecutors at 145 million euros.

After the conviction in the Ferma Băneasa case, Prince Paul fled the country, being spotted in Paris. He was provisionally arrested by the French authorities in 2022, in order to execute the European arrest warrant issued by the Romanian judicial authorities, based on the final judgment of conviction.

Who is Paul de Romania?

His father, Carol Mircea Grigore, born in 1920 in Romania, was considered the illegitimate son of Carol II, king of Romania from 1930 until his abdication in 1940, in favor of his younger son, Mihai I.

In December 1947, the royal family was expelled from Romania by the communists and its properties were confiscated.

Paul Philippe, with French, British and Romanian citizenship, was never recognized as a member of the royal family by his uncle Mihai I, the last king of Romania, who died in 2017.
